There are different types of stoma products available, designed to support a range of needs, body shapes and routines. Understanding the options available can help you explore what might work for you, as preferences can vary from person to person.

One-piece systems

The pouch and baseplate are combined into a single unit

The pouch can be changed without removing the baseplate

My pouch leaks

There are many reasons why your pouch could be leaking.

If your pouch is leaking, you should first consult your specialist stoma nurse who will be able to provide specialist advice. Here are some other tips you might also like to try:

Use a fitting template to measure your stoma and cut around the shape of your adhesive baseplate.
Empty your pouch regularly, ideally when it’s between a third and half full.
Check that your adhesive barrier is sticking firmly to your skin.
Make sure there are no creases or folds in your pouch.

I get sore skin

The biggest cause of sore skin is leakage which can lead to pouch failure. Also trauma from removing the pouch too quickly can damage the skin.

The skin around your stoma should look the same as the skin on the opposite side.

Ensure the hole in your pouch is cut to the correct size. Be aware that stomas change in shape and size in the first 6-8 weeks. It is important to check that you are cutting to the correct size to help avoid leakage and sore skin.
Avoid any soaps and lotions which contain perfumes and chemicals that could cause unnecessary irritation. Soaps can interfere with the natural pH of the skin and you will be advised by your specialist stoma nurse to use warm water when cleaning your stoma and the skin around it.
Always consult your specialist stoma nurse if you are experiencing sore skin, they will be able to assess your skin and advise on any changes that are required.

My stoma changes shape

Stomas can change size or shape, particularly in the weeks after surgery.
